JB-JL vs JB-DET Daihatsu engine comparison

It's time for the famous comparison between Daihatsu 4 pistons small engine(660cc) which are JB-JL and JB-DET(JB series engine). I'm not an automotive engineer nor a foreman, so all of my comparisons are not that detailed.

*Reminder - all the data gather here are from many sources(automotive forums, websites, my first-hand experiences).



PHYSICAL LOOK 
JB-JL(top) vs JB-DET(bottom) in the same engine bay

  1. Intake - Bigger intake plenum for JB-DET
  2. Cam position sensor 
  3. JB-DET - use coil on plug layout | JB-JL - use 2 coils wasted spark layout 
* some other JB-DET engine also use 2 coils wasted spark layout.

STANDARD TURBO SPEC 
JB-JL turbo(top) vs JB-DET turbo(bottom)
 JB-JL turbo
- RHF3 VQ29 
- RHF3 VQ27

JB-DET turbo
- RHF3 VQ37 twin scroll
- RHF3 VQ42

* This is all I've got, maybe got some others more.

There is not much of a different between JB-DET engine internal and JB-JL engine internal except compression ratio and peoples said that JB-DET engine conrod built with much more stronger materials. Peoples also said that JB-DET conrod is slightly bigger and thicker than JB-JL.

Okay, that concludes all of my findings about these JB series engine comparisons. These findings help me a little bit on making a decision to bought JB-DET engine over JB-JL engine after my old JB-JL engine blown. JB-DET is an improvement over the previous model which is JB-JL, and also to solve JB-JL minor reliability issues.

  1. What is the RPM that a standard RHF3 started to spool? If it is fully tuned, what is the RPM that the fully tuned RHF3 started to spool to create a boost?

    1. around 2k rpm rhf3 spool giving boost already.what do u mean by fully tuned rhf3?

    2. I mean, what is the spool time of a fully upgraded rhf3? How about the spool time of rhf4? Is it the same as rhf3?

    3. i dont think rhf3 can go any further that it is...there is a lot of types from rhf4...can u be more specific?

    4. People said smaller turbo such as rhf3 spool faster than bigger turbo, for example rhf4 and rhf5. So compared to rhf3, how fast rhf4 spool? Also it is said that twin scroll turbo also spool faster than normal turbo so twin scroll rhf3 spool faster than normal rhf3?

      What are those vq27 and vq37, are there different sizes of rhf3?

    5. for sure smaller turbo will spool faster than bigger turbo..its all depends on ur needs. vq term after ur turbo name is just to show in dept characteristic of ur turbo..nothing that ur eyes can spot the differences except maybe the flange.

    My l6 Jb det auto 1st gear to 2nd gear need around 4500rpm only will change

    1. light throttle or heavy throttle?..n may i know your rpm meter red line is at what rpm?

      a. How to determine light or heavy trottle? While driving i feel the acceleration pedal bit a heavy.

      b. My rpm red line at 8000.

      2. TURBO CHANGE TO L9 -
      3. PIPING CHANGE FROM STD 1 INCH TO 1.5 INCH DUA TABUNG
      4. ADD IN COOLER FOR AUTO TRANSMISSION
      5 RIM 15 INCH

      its hard to determine by just reading. but of your gear changing in 4500rpm and your redline is 8000rpm. i think its normal for your engine maybe.

      where are you from sir?..maybe i can suggest you to visit reliable and knowledgeable workshop around your area?

    1. hi there, all you need are the turbo itself and turbo manifold that come with twin scroll turbo. its just pnp if you got that 2 items.

    saya ada beli 1 set enjin lantai L9 JB-DET utk d pasang kat kenari sya.

    Pertanyaan;
    Adakah L6 JB JL & L9 JB DET guna Timing Chain kits yg sama? Atau boleh guna Myvi? & Lastly Kat mana kedai local boleh order/beli?

  17. Nak tnya sy pkai kelisa 1.0 A. Plan nak tukar enjin jb-jl kwn punya.. soalannya xmnyesal ke nti tukar ke 660t sbb 1.0 mcm lg power.. ada sapa2 yg da tukar enjin masuk kelisa?

    1. Baik stick 1.0 atau kalau nk tukar pon naik 1.3 na or turbo..x berbaloi turun cc semate2 nk turbu

    2. 1.0 54hp, 660turbo 64 hp. Pikir2 la sendiri. Masing2 ada advantage, 660turbo mmg sesuai utk acceleration sebab dia 64hp, lepastu pakai close gear ratio gearbox. Tapi top speed hampeh la 120kmh kat 5.5k rpm kalau tak silap. Kalau enjin 1.0, pikap boleh la , top speed lagi sedap sebab gear 5 nya lagi panjang sikit . 120kmh kat rpm 4.5k kalau tak silap.senang cerita , 1.0 sedap main highway, 660 turbo sedap main acceleration
